And this is fertile ground for startups, as became clear in the online dialogue promoted by Pequenas Empresas &amp; Grandes Neg\u00f3cios, held in the context of the open applications for the eighth edition of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.100startupstowatch.com.br\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">100 Startups to Watch<\/a><\/span>.<\/p><p>The award, organized by Pequenas Empresas &amp; Grandes Neg\u00f3cios (PEGN), \u00c9poca Neg\u00f3cios, and Valor Econ\u00f4mico, in partnership with EloGroup and Innovc, highlights the most promising companies in entrepreneurship, technology, and innovation across key sectors of the Brazilian economy.<\/p><p>According to data from the Energy Research Office (EPE), <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2025\/06\/02\/brazil-generates-88-of-power-from-renewables-in-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">88.2% of Brazil\u2019s electricity demand in 2024 was met by renewable sources<\/a><\/span>, with wind and solar accounting for 24% of the total. Distributed solar generation, including micro and mini systems, reached 5.6% of the country\u2019s total electricity production.<\/p><p>According to the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL), <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/canalsolar.com.br\/en\/gd-solar-40-gw-installed-capacity-brazil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Brazil surpassed 40 GW of installed capacity in distributed solar generation (DG)<\/a><\/span>. In July 2024, that figure stood at 30 GW.<\/p><p>This scenario\u2014reflecting just one specific slice of the broader market\u2014reveals the strong appetite for innovation in Brazil\u2019s electricity sector, especially as the country remains under the global spotlight ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), set to take place in Par\u00e1, in November 2025.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0bb8068 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0bb8068\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Role of Startups in the Energy Transition<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-db8dade elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"db8dade\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u201cStartups are not just welcome \u2014 they\u2019re essential,\u201d says Bruno Cabral, partner at EloGroup. \u201cThey have the ability to explore opportunities where other companies only see risk. They test new models in agile and disruptive ways, and they accelerate emerging discussions, such as distributed generation, microgrids, IoT, green hydrogen, and more. We\u2019re seeing many promising examples \u2014 from carbon traceability platforms to battery-as-a-service models. Without startups, discussing these topics would be a major challenge. That\u2019s why they are fundamental.\u201d<\/p><p>Hudson Mendon\u00e7a, founder and CEO of Energy Summit, reinforces this view: \u201cToday there\u2019s a consensus that the future of energy and the energy transition rests on the 4 Ds: decarbonization, decentralization, digitalization, and democratization. This is a very favorable environment for startups. Two trillion dollars are invested annually in the energy sector, and there is still no clear answer as to which path will prevail over the next 20 years. This uncertainty is fertile ground for these kinds of companies.\u201d<\/p><p>Lu\u00edza Cohen, corporate innovation manager at Neoenergia, highlights the challenges posed by climate change and how innovation can offer a response to the growing risks affecting Brazil\u2019s energy grid.<\/p><p>\u201cBrazil has a natural competitive advantage in our energy matrix,\u201d says Lu\u00edza. \u201cBut climate change remains a significant challenge. We\u2019re facing heat waves and prolonged droughts that impact energy production. Modernizing, expanding, and digitizing our power grids is essential to ensure resilience and sustainability. We must invest in innovation. You can\u2019t talk about energy transition without talking about startups.\u201d<\/p><p>Maur\u00edcio Queiroz, from Tidalwatt \u2014 a startup selected for the 100 Startups to Watch list that developed proprietary technology to generate energy from ocean currents \u2014 spoke about the broad scope of startup activity in the energy ecosystem. \u201cStartups have the ability to solve both old and new problems,\u201d says Queiroz. \u201cBrazil doesn\u2019t have to stick to outdated solutions if there are innovative ways to address the same issues. There are new solutions to our problems \u2014 and startups bring them to the table. We need that.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-131c917 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"131c917\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Relationship with Large Corporations and New Ways of Experimenting<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-655aa5b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"655aa5b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Bruno Cabral, from EloGroup, further explored the evolving relationship between large corporations and startups:<br \/>\u201cWe\u2019ve seen a behavioral shift in organizations,\u201d says Cabral. \u201cMajor players have moved from being spectators to becoming active participants in the energy innovation ecosystem.\u201d<\/p><p>In the past, partnerships between corporations and startups were mostly sporadic. Today, companies are establishing internal hubs, accelerators, and open innovation programs. They are building structures to identify high-impact technologies within their ecosystems, with well-defined criteria, validation pathways, and innovation funnels.<\/p><p>Cabral also highlighted the evolution of investment vehicles and experimentation methods:<br \/>\u201cPreviously, the model was too rigid. Now, we\u2019re seeing more flexible approaches, such as corporate venture capital (CVC), minority stake investments, and structures designed to foster synergy,\u201d he explains.<br \/>\u201cThere\u2019s now an environment that encourages testing solutions and assessing their scalability. Another important change is prioritizing structured, end-to-end pilots \u2014 including regulatory integration from the beginning of the experiment \u2014 to ensure scale-up potential. Regulatory and legal issues are no longer left until the end.
