- Founded in 2022, re.green aims to restore one million hectares in the Amazon and Atlantic Forest. Its business model is based on the sale of carbon credits and forest assets.
- With the support of EloGroup, re.green made its operations more efficient, scalable, and accurate through a full-stack technology solution.
- The solution was specifically applied to the land acquisition stage, which evaluates farms that can be restored. The time required to submit a farm profile for technical analysis was reduced from 40 days to just 50 seconds.
It was within the pressing issue of climate imbalance, accelerated by the destruction of our biomes, that the Brazilian company re.green identified a business opportunity. This opportunity goes beyond generating positive economic results—it also encompasses environmental and social impact, and most importantly: at scale.
In this article, we will explain how re.green, together with us at EloGroup—a transformation consultancy that helps clients achieve their business goals through the lenses of technology, data, and management—was able to make its operations more efficient, scalable, and precise with a full-stack technology solution.
In other words, through a set of technological solutions implemented after an immersion and diagnostic process conducted by EloGroup, re.green managed to accelerate its land acquisition process, paving the way to achieve its goal of capturing 15 million tons of carbon annually. Processes that previously took up to forty days can now be completed in seconds.
But first, let’s dive into the company’s story, its goals, and how re.green operates to generate positive economic, environmental, and social impact.
Origins and challenges
Re.green was founded in 2022 with a bold and vital goal: to restore one million hectares in the Amazon and Atlantic Forest. Its founders devised an innovative business model to achieve this, based on the sale of carbon credits and forest assets. The initiative is supported by cutting-edge science and technology, as well as a specialized and experienced technical team dedicated to the challenge.
The company’s operations involve a series of steps aimed at the environmental restoration of degraded lands. To achieve this, re.green uses native Brazilian seedlings cultivated in one of the country’s leading nurseries, located in São Paulo, alongside other local nurseries across Brazil. These efforts employ advanced methods developed by the scientific team over the past 30 years.
A crucial part of this process is identifying lands with high potential for environmental restoration. The company conducts this identification using proprietary models of spatial and financial analysis. These lands then go through a screening process, advancing to stages of negotiation and legal and environmental due diligence, which culminate in the acquisition of the property.
“Our land acquisition model relies on analyzing various factors involving multiple areas of the company, from field researchers to the legal team,” says Fernando Visser, the company’s Director of Technology and Innovation. “Re.green aims to perform this analysis at scale and with unparalleled speed. For that, technology and process automation are essential.”
It was at this stage of the process that re.green, together with EloGroup, identified significant opportunities for optimization.
Following an immersion and diagnostic phase, a complete workflow automation solution and a full-stack platform for conducting technical land analyses were developed. The architecture was built using various Amazon Web Services products. Later, it was scaled to integrate even more functionalities, further enhancing the precision and speed of re.green’s land acquisition process.
The technical solution
The solution involved a cloud-based technical architecture that provided agility and flexibility to the project, speeding up the provisioning of computational infrastructure and ensuring scalability. This approach aligned with the company’s ambitions for growth while maintaining effective cost control for the business.
To accelerate value generation, a market-standard BPMS (Business Process Management System) platform was utilized.
Additionally, a custom platform linked to the core service was provisioned, forming the full-stack solution. This product enhances the execution of tasks performed by re.green specialists, such as manual geospatial analyses, configuring VCU (Verified Carbon Unit) curves, and CAPEX curves for restoration models.
The new architecture delivered significant improvements in re.green’s land acquisition process, including both speed and accuracy in property registration. Key results included:
- Geospatial polygon checks for prospective lands were reduced from 7 days to 15 seconds.
- The time required to send a farm profile for technical analysis was cut from 40 days to 50 seconds.
- Data updates for registered properties in the analysis pipeline, which previously took 7 days, now occur instantaneously.
- The technical team’s productivity increased significantly, with validated lands rising from 14 to 57 per month.
In summary, re.green’s land acquisition process gained both speed and precision, helping the company accelerate its objectives and enabling the technical team to focus efforts more efficiently. These advancements also had measurable environmental impacts:
- re.green increased its annual prospecting capacity from 600,000 to approximately 2 million hectares. Over the past three years, the company has prospected about 3 million hectares, with 11,000 hectares already undergoing restoration.
“We rely heavily on science and technology at re.green, and finding the right lands is critical to improving the efficiency of our operations,” says Fernando Visser. “The new solution not only accelerated our land acquisition process but also significantly enhanced the accuracy of re.green’s activities, helping us achieve our business goals.”
